From Directory Services to vi. Take a quick look at Arek's crash course in vi.

We look forward to working with you!

Arek contributed material towards this book from Peachpit (most of Chapter 17, Secure Authentication): "Mac OS X System Administration Reference, Volume 1: Directory Services, Security, and Networking and File Services." This book is used in several advanced classes offered by Apple Training, such as Mac OS 340 Security Best Practices for Mac OS X v10.4.

See the review of the book up on afp548.com.

In addition to the documentation up at apple.com/server/documentation, we recommend two books on Mac OS X Server. Regan's "Mac OS X Server Essentials" is used in Apple's training class by the same name. Is is an excellent basic level book, and will help the novice user get their servers up and running quickly. Bartosh's "Essential Mac OS X Panther Server Administration" is an excellent book which includes advanced details, though it only covers up to version 10.3, not 10.4.

For shell scripting, the purple book is a great reference and learing resource, and the "Wicked" book gives some interesting examples pertaining specifically to Mac OS X. We are recommending Aaron Hillegass' book when you're ready to make the jump to Cocoa.

While you really do not need to know UNIX to have a great Mac OS X experience, you can do some really powerful things if you know what you're doing. If you want to improve your UNIX skills, check out UNIX Power Tools.

Mac OS X Internals by Amit Singh is not for the faint of heart.
